Iran, Europe Conduct Second Round of Deputy Foreign Ministers’ Talks in Geneva

The deputy foreign ministers of Iran, along with representatives from the three major European powers and the European Union foreign policy deputy chairwoman, held their previously announced meeting on Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland.

Iran (IMNA) - According to media reports, the discussions between Tehran and the European Troika—the United Kingdom, Germany, and France—commenced Tuesday afternoon at the deputy foreign ministerial level.

The Iranian delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi.

Following the conclusion of the talks, Lebanese Al Mayadeen correspondent reported no joint statement was issued.

The core topics of the meeting included Europe’s threat to trigger the dispute resolution mechanism, and issues relating to the extension of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorses the 2015 nuclear agreement, formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

After the talks, Gharibabadi posted on X in both Farsi and English, stating, “Dr. Takht-Ravanchi and I held another meeting with the political directors of the three European countries in Geneva.” He added, “Both sides outlined their respective views on resolution 2231," and emphasized that "Iran remains committed to diplomacy and a mutually beneficial diplomatic solution.” He also urged, “High time for the E3 and UNSC to make the right choice, and give diplomacy time and space.”

The first round of deputy foreign ministers’ talks took place on July 25 in Istanbul.
