Israeli Navy Seizes British-Flagged Humanitarian Ship En Route to Gaza

Israeli naval forces intercepted and boarded the British-flagged aid ship Handala late Saturday as it attempted to deliver humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip, which remains under a nearly total blockade.

Iran (IMNA) - According to organizers and footage streamed online, 21 unarmed activists—including lawmakers, medics, and volunteers—were on board when the vessel was stormed by Israeli soldiers, who ordered the passengers to raise their hands in surrender.

The Handala had departed Italy, carrying baby formula, food, and medicine, aiming to break Israel's maritime blockade under what organizers described as international humanitarian law. As the ship neared Gaza's coast, the crew reported seeing a drone overhead before being surrounded by Israeli navy vessels. The activists issued a "distress call" as the interception began, but according to crew member Huwaida Arraf, no response was received when they tried to contact the Israeli Navy.

French member of the European Parliament Emma Fourreau, who was on board, confirmed the interception in a live message: “The Israeli military is here.” Videos showed the crew wearing life jackets and holding their hands up to avoid confrontation. Fourreau called for an end to what she described as “genocide,” referencing Israel’s military actions in Gaza since October 2023 and the ongoing blockade since 2007, which has severely restricted humanitarian access and contributed to a deepening crisis in the territory.

Following the boarding, Israeli authorities confirmed the ship would be towed to Ashdod Port and the activists deported. Organizers and international observers have criticized the move, arguing the interception occurred in international waters and violates both maritime and humanitarian principle.

The attempted voyage follows similar efforts in recent months, as other aid ships bound for Gaza have been intercepted—sometimes violently—by Israeli forces. Human rights and aid organizations continue to warn that Israel’s tightened siege is exacerbating mass starvation and disease in Gaza, where over 59,700 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have died since October 2023 due to direct conflict or deteriorating conditions. The Handala’s cargo included critical items such as baby formula, food, and medicine, reflecting the desperate needs of Gaza’s population as access to supplies remains almost entirely blocked.
