Iran Rejects Argentina’s “Baseless” AMIA Bombing Accusations, Calls for Fair Judicial Process

Tehran has dismissed as “baseless” the accusations raised by Argentina against Iranian nationals in connection with the 1994 AMIA bombing, urging the country’s judiciary to ensure a fair process free from third-party influence.

Iran (IMNA) - In a statement released Friday, marking the 31st anniversary of the bombing attack on the Argentine Israeli Mutual Association (AMIA) community centre in Buenos Aires—which killed 85 people and injured more than 300—the Iranian Foreign Ministry highlighted its position. The Ministry stated that groups linked to Israel exploited the “suspicious” explosion from the outset, diverting the investigation in a misleading direction and damaging longstanding Iran-Argentina relations.

The statement reaffirmed that for over thirty years, Iran has consistently condemned all acts of terrorism and insisted on the necessity of a transparent and fair trial into the AMIA incident. “Completely rejecting the accusations against its citizens, the Islamic Republic has condemned the insistence of certain domestic circles in Argentina to pressure the country's judicial system into issuing baseless charges and seemingly judicial rulings against Iranian citizens,” the statement read, also calling for the true masterminds of the attack to be revealed.

The Foreign Ministry further asserted that clear evidence has emerged in recent years, showing the Zionist regime and associated groups influencing Argentina’s judiciary to press unwarranted charges against Iranians. It referenced frequent changes to the judicial team, instances of corruption, resignations of judges, and even attempts on their lives as signs of an intentional strategy to prevent a transparent and fair investigation.

The statement noted that Iran, seeking only to protect bilateral relations and the dignity of its citizens, entered talks with Argentina that resulted in a 2013 memorandum of understanding. However, less than two years later, Buenos Aires unilaterally canceled the agreement, thereby halting the process of uncovering the truth and identifying the real perpetrators.

“The Islamic Republic strongly emphasizes the baseless nature of claims against Iranian citizens, insists on the restoration of the accused citizens’ dignity, and demands an end to the show trial, while expecting the Argentinean judicial authorities to handle the case in a transparent and fair manner free from politicization and undue influence by third parties,” the ministry declared.

The statement concluded by asserting that, in accordance with international law, Iran reserves its legal and legitimate rights to respond to any improper or unreasonable actions taken against itself or its citizens.
