Iran Urged to Curb Trade with Germany Following Berlin’s Support for Israeli Actions

Calls are mounting within Iran for the government to reduce trade interactions with Germany and to restrict German-related cargo activity in the Persian Gulf. The movement follows Berlin’s public support of Israel’s recent military actions against Iranian territory.

Iran (IMNA) - A report published Tuesday by the semi-official Fars news agency advocates for Tehran to impose economic penalties on Germany in response to what it describes as increasing anti-Iran rhetoric from Berlin. Specifically, the report calls for:

Raising tariffs on German imports of manufacturing and medical equipment, which make up significant revenue streams for German companies and the federal government.

Considering stricter measures, such as limiting the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz if they are registered in Germany, insured by German entities, or carry cargo destined for German ports.

The report claims that such economic actions would elevate the costs for Germany in pursuing hostile policies and serve as a deterrent for other countries considering similar stances against Iran.

"Iranian authorities have previously warned that the country would close the Strait of Hormuz if faced with a military threat from hostile powers," the report noted. However, it also acknowledged that restricting cargo ship movement has neither been implemented nor referenced previously by senior Iranian officials.

This debate intensified after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, on June 17—just days following Israel’s military campaign against Iran—praised what he characterized as the "dirty work Israel is doing for all of us".

The Fars report suggests that implementing these economic deterrents could create both political and financial consequences for Germany, as well as any other state contemplating similar opposition to Iran.
