PKK Begins Disarmament as Erdogan Hails Step Toward Terrorism-Free Turkey

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has welcomed the disarmament process initiated by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), describing it as a significant move toward achieving a terrorism-free Turkey.

Iran (IMNA) - "I hope the major step that was taken today on the path to a terrorism-free Turkey will bring about positive results," Erdogan stated on his X social media page. He also expressed his hope for divine guidance, saying, "for the sake of our security, our people, and lasting peace in our region."

The president is expected to address the issue in greater detail on Saturday.

According to earlier reports, the first group of PKK militants surrendered their weapons in the mountains of the Sulaymaniyah Governorate, located in Iraqi Kurdistan, on Friday. Footage released by Turkish media showed at least 30 submachine guns and one rocket launcher being symbolically set on fire. Approximately 30 PKK members, about half of them women, participated in the ceremony.

The disarmament follows a call in February by PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan—currently imprisoned in Turkey on terrorism charges—for all PKK-affiliated groups to lay down their arms and end the armed conflict with Ankara. In May, the party’s conference decided to self-dissolve, bringing an end to nearly five decades of confrontation with Turkish authorities.
