Iran (IMNA) - The project features an 800-kilometer pipeline network that transports desalinated water from southeastern Iran’s Sea of Oman to industrial consumers in Isfahan. Jamalinejad announced on Tuesday that all essential infrastructure, including storage tanks and pumping stations, has been installed, as reported by Press TV.
This first phase enables the transfer of 70 million cubic meters of desalinated water annually to Isfahan. While the official inauguration date remains undisclosed, the water supply will initially serve the Isfahan Oil Refinery—one of Iran’s largest oil processing facilities—and other northern provincial industries before extending to the Mobarakeh Steel Company, the largest steel producer in West Asia located in southern Isfahan.
Funding for the project came from these two major companies, which helped accelerate completion in under two years, according to the governor.
Isfahan is a key industrial hub in Iran but has historically depended on water diverted from neighboring provinces, adversely affecting agriculture and causing dissatisfaction among local farmers. The province’s iconic Zayanderud River has nearly dried up due to extensive water use for industrial and farming needs.
Looking ahead, a second phase of the project could increase desalinated water supply to 400 million cubic meters per year, further supporting the region’s industries, Jamalinejad stated.
