Hezbollah to Hold Massive Funeral for Martyred Leader Hassan Nasrallah

Lebanon's Hezbollah is set to conduct a massive funeral for its former leader Hassan Nasrallah on Sunday, nearly five months after his assassination in an Israeli airstrike.

Iran (IMNA) - The event, scheduled for 1 PM local time at the Camille Chamoun sports stadium in Beirut’s southern suburbs, aims to demonstrate the group's political strength amid ongoing tensions with Israel.

Nasrallah was martyred on September 27, 2024, during an Israeli strike while he was meeting with commanders in a bunker. His martyrdom has left Hezbollah supporters in disbelief and sent shockwaves throughout Lebanon and the wider region. Revered by many, Nasrallah transformed Hezbollah into a significant military force with regional influence and became one of the most prominent Arab figures in recent history.

The funeral will also honor Hashem Safieddine, who briefly led Hezbollah after Nasrallah's death before he was also killed by Israeli forces. Safieddine will be buried separately in his hometown on Monday.

Hezbollah has implemented strict security measures for the event, anticipating tens of thousands of attendees from across Lebanon and abroad. Civil aviation authorities have announced that Beirut airport will close for four hours during the funeral, highlighting the expected turnout. Current Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem is expected to deliver a speech during the ceremony, which aims to reaffirm the group's resilience and popularity within the Shiite community.

The U.S. embassy has advised American citizens to avoid the area during the funeral, reflecting concerns over security amid heightened tensions following a year of hostilities with Israel.
