Iran's Ambassador Calls for Nuclear Disarmament Amid Rising Arms Race

Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, has emphasized that nuclear disarmament is the only path to achieving global peace.

Iran (IMNA) - Bahreini made these remarks during the UN Disarmament Conference, where he expressed deep concern over the ongoing arms race, particularly in nuclear weapons, despite the conference's efforts to promote disarmament.

Bahreini highlighted the significant financial resources being diverted from social and economic development to maintain, produce, and modernize nuclear weapons. He noted that this expenditure undermines efforts to establish sustainable peace and security worldwide.

The ambassador criticized countries possessing nuclear weapons for failing to meet their disarmament obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Instead, these nations are actively modernizing their nuclear arsenals. Bahreini pointed out that there are approximately 3,880 active nuclear warheads and a total of about 12,000 worldwide, with NATO member countries continuing to rely on these weapons in violation of legally binding agreements.

Bahreini's comments come as global tensions rise, with many nations increasingly dependent on nuclear deterrence, further complicating efforts toward disarmament.
