Iran Congratulates Lebanon's New President, Seeks to Strengthen Relations

Iran's embassy in Beirut has extended congratulations to Joseph Aoun, the newly elected president of Lebanon, expressing eagerness to enhance relations between the two countries.

Iran (IMNA) - In a statement on its X account, the embassy noted, "We congratulate the election of General Joseph Aoun as the president of our brotherly country, Lebanon, in an atmosphere of comprehensive consensus." The statement continued, "We wish Your Excellency success in your mission and look forward to cooperation aimed at strengthening the relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Lebanon and collaborating in various fields in a way that serves the common interests of the two countries and contributes to stability and prosperity in the region."

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, also congratulated President Aoun on his election. This comes after Lebanese legislators elected Aoun as president following two rounds of voting in the 128-member parliament, ending a two-year political deadlock. Lebanon had been without a formal government since October 2022, when former President Michel Aoun left office. Aoun secured 99 votes in the second round, marking a significant step towards resolving the country's prolonged leadership vacuum.
