Iran (IMNA) - In a statement shared on social media, Takht-Ravanchi noted that discussions with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri encompassed bilateral, regional, and international issues, highlighting the importance of economic relations, particularly regarding Chabahar Port. He described his meeting with India's Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar as productive, reaffirming both nations' commitment to enhancing cooperation across various sectors.
The consultations addressed a wide range of topics, including agricultural cooperation, trade, and cultural ties. The significance of Chabahar Port was underscored as a crucial element in supporting Afghanistan’s reconstruction and economic development.
Historically, Iran and India have maintained a long-standing relationship, formalized by the 2003 Strategic Partnership Agreement. Despite challenges posed by U.S. sanctions that halted energy trade in 2019, both countries are exploring avenues to boost non-oil trade. The recent agreement allowing India Ports Global (IPGL) to develop Chabahar for ten years represents a significant step towards revitalizing economic ties.
Chabahar Port serves as a vital trade link between the Indian Ocean and Central Asia, positioning itself as a competitor to Chinese-funded ports in Pakistan. The potential for increased cooperation in sectors such as agriculture and tourism was also discussed during the consultations.
As both nations look to the future, they aim to deepen their partnership amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics.
