UN Security Council Paralyzed on Palestinian Crisis as U.S. Vetoes Continue, Russian Ministry Reports

The United Nations Security Council remains immobilized regarding the Palestinian crisis, primarily due to repeated vetoes by the United States, according to a statement from the Russian foreign ministry.

Iran (IMNA) - The ministry emphasized that since the escalation of violence in the Arab-Palestinian conflict, it has been the UN General Assembly that took decisive action by passing a resolution urging a halt to hostilities and facilitating humanitarian aid. This resolution is deemed crucial in light of the ongoing situation. The Security Council, responsible for maintaining international peace and security, has been rendered ineffective, having faced six vetoes from Washington since the current crisis began, as reported by TASS.

On December 11, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted two resolutions: one supporting the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and another demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Notably, seven countries, including Israel and the United States, voted against these resolutions.

The ongoing conflict escalated on October 7, 2023, when Israel launched a military offensive in Gaza following a significant operation by Hamas in retaliation for previous Israeli actions against Palestinians. Since then, Israel has imposed a complete siege on Gaza, severely restricting access to essential resources such as fuel, electricity, food, and water for over two million residents in the area.
