Iran Introduces "Tourist Card" to Boost Foreign Tourism and Currency Exchange

Foreign tourists visiting Iran will soon have the opportunity to obtain a "tourist card," facilitating the conversion of their currencies into rials, according to Reza Salehi Amiri, the Iranian Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts.

Iran (IMNA) - During a statement on Tuesday, Salehi Amiri highlighted that the absence of a reliable currency exchange system and the lack of international credit card acceptance have created significant hurdles for the tourism sector in Iran. He urged the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) to take action to resolve these issues.

Emphasizing the need for reform in Iran's tourism potential, Salehi Amiri identified the "Nowruz region" as a primary target market, which encompasses countries like Azerbaijan. He noted that previously, over 1.8 million Azeri tourists visited Iran annually; however, this number plummeted to just 100,000 following a diplomatic incident in Tehran on January 27, 2023.

In discussions held during his recent trip to Baku with Azerbaijani officials, Salehi Amiri expressed optimism about reopening travel routes and revitalizing tourist exchanges between the two nations.

Additionally, he pointed out that Persian Gulf states, particularly Iraq, represent another key tourism market. More than 3 million Iraqi tourists visit Iran each year, while around 7.5 million Iranian pilgrims travel to Iraq annually—a disparity that he believes needs to be addressed.

Salehi Amiri also indicated that improving tourism relations with Saudi Arabia is a significant objective for his ministry. He mentioned that President Masoud Pezeshkian is committed to resolving ongoing issues with Saudi Arabia and noted progress in this area.

The minister concluded by expressing hope that upcoming meetings between President Pezeshkian and leaders from Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia would lead to resolutions and foster a new chapter in diplomatic relations.
