Iran, Russia Unite to Support Syria Against Rising Terrorism

The presidents of Iran and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to support Syria in its ongoing battle against terrorism amid a surge of militant activities in the northern region.

Iran (IMNA) - In a phone conversation on Monday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the escalating security situation in Syria, particularly following a recent offensive attributed to Israeli-backed terrorist groups.

Both leaders expressed concern that the recent terrorist actions pose a significant threat to the stability and security of Syria and the broader region. Pezeshkian highlighted that a ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel offered a glimmer of hope for peace; however, he warned that renewed terrorist activities, allegedly supported by Israel, have heightened tensions.

Pezeshkian characterized the resurgence of terrorism as part of a "dangerous plan" orchestrated by the United States and Israel to disrupt regional political dynamics. He emphasized that such threats could be countered through unity among regional nations. The Iranian president commended Russia's efforts in promoting regional peace and stability, expressing Tehran's readiness to enhance cooperation with Moscow.

Putin concurred with Pezeshkian, stating that ongoing terrorist activities in northern Syria threaten the country's sovereignty and regional security. He condemned the support provided to these terrorist factions and reaffirmed Russia's determination to assist the Syrian government in combating these groups. Putin also proposed convening an emergency meeting within the Astana peace process framework to address the situation.

The Kremlin noted that the conversation focused on Syria's "escalating situation," with both leaders voicing unconditional support for the Syrian government's efforts to restore constitutional order. They also underscored the importance of coordinating efforts with Turkey.

Iran and Russia have been key allies of Syria since foreign-sponsored militancy erupted in March 2011. Despite significant victories against terrorist groups like Daesh in 2017, parts of northern Syria remain under militant control. The recent offensive by Hay’at Tahrir al-Shams (HTS) has marked one of the largest assaults in years, capturing territory in Aleppo and advancing toward Hama.

In a separate discussion with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Pezeshkian reiterated Iran's full support for Syria's fight against terrorism, emphasizing Tehran's readiness to bolster cooperation in overcoming the current crisis.
