Iran (IMNA) - This initiative comes despite the challenges posed by ongoing sanctions, economic restrictions, and limitations on publishing scholarly work, which have contributed to a decline in Iran's ranking from 15th to 17th over the past three years, according to Shahin Akhoundzadeh, an official with the health ministry.
To achieve this goal, Akhoundzadeh emphasized the need for increased funding, enhanced research facilitation, and the promotion of meritocracy. These measures are expected not only to bolster scientific output but also to mitigate the emigration of young talent from Iran. The health ministry's website highlighted these strategies as essential for compensating for recent setbacks in research and technology.
In a related development, Iran's scientific associations have seen significant growth, increasing from 322 in the Iranian year 1392 (2013-2014) to 396 last year, marking a 22.9% rise. Interdisciplinary and humanitarian associations have led this growth, with their numbers climbing from 50 and 102 to 85 and 142, respectively. These associations play a crucial role in knowledge production and scientific development, fostering an environment conducive to free thought and democratic engagement.
According to data from Scopus, Iran published 78,225 scientific articles in 2022, maintaining its position as the 15th country globally for scientific publications for the fourth consecutive year. Furthermore, Iran ranks first in the region for the number of scientific publications and has consistently held this position since 2014. The Tehran University of Medical Sciences has contributed significantly to this output, accounting for over 6,800 publications.
Overall, despite facing numerous challenges, Iran is committed to enhancing its scientific capabilities and achieving a higher global ranking in scientific production by leveraging its educational institutions and fostering a supportive research environment.
