Iran (IMNA) - This announcement was made by Ali Shabnavard, the director general of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA), who emphasized that this growth is driven by ongoing construction of new power plants.
Shabnavard highlighted the government's commitment to addressing the electricity supply-demand imbalance through renewable energy development. Currently, Iran's nominal renewable capacity stands at 1,371 MW, with an addition of 53 MW recorded just last week.
In recent years, the Iranian government has implemented significant measures to accelerate renewable energy growth, including diversifying financing models, increasing guaranteed electricity purchase ceilings, and facilitating renewable electricity trading on the Iran Energy Exchange (IRENEX). The Energy Ministry aims to add 10,000 MW to the country's renewable capacity by the end of 2025.
In January 2022, memorandums of understanding were signed between the Energy Ministry and private contractors for constructing new renewable power plants nationwide. In terms of production, Iranian renewable power plants generated 264 million kilowatt-hours (KWh) in July 2023 alone, marking a 23% increase from the same month in the previous year.
As of now, SATBA reports that there are 600 renewable power plants under construction with a total capacity of 13,500 MW, which is expected to elevate the share of renewables in Iran’s electricity generation to 15% within two years.
