Iran (IMNA) - In a statement released on Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei dismissed the allegations as “completely baseless and unsubstantiated.” This response follows the unsealing of criminal charges by the U.S. Justice Department, which included details of a purported plot allegedly supported by Iran to kill Trump before the upcoming election.
A criminal complaint filed in federal court in New York City accuses an unnamed official from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of instructing a contact to develop a plan to surveil and ultimately assassinate Trump. Baghaei characterized the timing of these claims as a “malicious conspiracy” orchestrated by Zionist and anti-Iranian factions aimed at exacerbating tensions between the United States and Iran.
The allegations surfaced after Trump was declared the winner of the presidential election on Wednesday. Notably, Trump survived an assassination attempt in July, during which he sustained only minor injuries to his ear. In August, Iran had already distanced itself from any connections to a Pakistani individual arrested in the U.S. for allegedly plotting to assassinate American politicians.
The backdrop to these tensions includes the U.S. withdrawal from a nuclear accord with Iran in 2018 and subsequent sanctions imposed under then-President Trump. Additionally, Trump had previously ordered the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike in January 2020, an act that has been cited as a potential motive for Iranian retaliation.
Baghaei reaffirmed that Iran will employ “all legitimate and legal means at domestic and international levels to restore the rights of the Iranian nation,” emphasizing Tehran's commitment to defending its sovereignty against what it perceives as unjust accusations.
