Iran (IMNA) - Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Department, announced on Saturday that the project is funded by national resources and focuses on enhancing critical structures in the Fahraj region.
The upgrades aim to bolster safety and ensure visitor comfort at this unique site. Plans include expanding amenities for tourist guidance, emergency services, and security. Bordbar highlighted that the ongoing project encompasses the completion of a base dedicated to the World Heritage site, along with the establishment of perimeter walls and fencing as well as the installation of mechanical and electrical systems.
Fahraj, a historical area in southeastern Kerman province, was significant during the Seljuk era due to its location on the Silk Road. It boasts several natural and cultural attractions, including distinctive “nebkhas”—plant-supported sand formations—striking Rig Yalan dunes, and rugged Kalouts.
The Lut Desert is renowned for its extreme environment, often recording the highest land surface temperatures on Earth, with one measurement reaching 70.7°C. Its unique landscape features crescent-shaped dunes and towering nebkhas up to 12 meters high, earning it a reputation for being inhospitable yet captivating for researchers and adventure travelers alike.
Despite its harsh climate, the region supports resilient flora and fauna adapted to survive in extreme heat and limited water supply. This includes specialized insect species and hardy plants found at the basin's peripheries, showcasing nature’s resilience in one of the world's most challenging environments.
With these new developments, authorities hope to protect this natural wonder while facilitating sustainable tourism, enabling more visitors to safely experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the Lut Desert.
