Iran Condemns US Sanctions on Energy Sector Following Missile Strike

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has condemned the recent sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical sectors. This action follows Tehran's missile attack on Israeli military targets on October 1.

Iran (IMNA) - In a statement released on Sunday, spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei described the US sanctions as “unlawful and unjustifiable,” asserting that they were enacted under the pretext of Iran's defense operation against Israeli military sites. On Friday, the US Treasury Department sanctioned companies and vessels allegedly involved in trading and transporting Iranian oil in response to the missile strike.

Baghaei defended Iran's actions, stating that the missile strike was a legitimate exercise of self-defense under international law. He criticized the US sanctions as lacking any legal or logical basis, characterizing them as a form of ransom to the Israeli regime.

The spokesman further highlighted the “negative and destructive” role of the US in destabilizing security in West Asia, accusing it of being complicit in crimes committed by Israel against Palestinians. He held the US government responsible for exacerbating violence and instability in the region through its support of Israel.

Baghaei reaffirmed Iran's right to respond appropriately to these sanctions, emphasizing that the US's strategy of maximum pressure would not deter Iran from defending its sovereignty and national interests.
