Iran (IMNA) - The Iranian Foreign Ministry expressed strong objections to the derogatory content shared on the embassy's official Instagram page, which celebrated "Wear It Purple Day," a day promoting LGBTQIA+ inclusion in Australia.
In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry condemned the post as "insulting" and contrary to Iranian and Islamic traditions. The director general of the ministry’s Regional Department emphasized that such actions violate international law and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which mandates respect for the host country's customs and values.
Ambassador McConville clarified that the post did not specifically mention Iran and asserted that the embassy had no intention of offending Iranian values. He committed to conveying Iran’s concerns to the Australian government.
The controversial post included a message about creating a supportive environment for LGBTQIA+ youth, which has sparked significant backlash in Iran, where homosexuality is illegal and can lead to severe penalties. The Australian Embassy's actions have raised questions about diplomatic norms and the sensitivity of cultural differences in international relations.
