Iran Vows "Special Operations" Retaliation After Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh Assassinated in Tehran

The Permanent Mission of Iran to the United Nations announced on Wednesday that the response to the assassination of Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh will be "special operations", following a targeted airstrike that killed him in the Iranian capital.

Iran (IMNA) - Haniyeh, who was re-elected head of Hamas in 2021, was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday. He was martyred, along with one of his bodyguards, when his residence was targeted in Tehran, according to a statement released by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Nasser Kan'ani, confirmed that an investigation into the details of the incident is underway. Meanwhile, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has called for avenging Haniyeh's martyrdom on Iranian territory.

The Hamas movement has vowed that the assassination will not go unanswered, as Israel continues its military campaign in the Gaza Strip, which has killed over 39,400 victims and injured more than 91,000 since October 7, 2023.
