Russia Envoy Warns Against IAEA Resolution Against Iran, Fears Deterioration of Situation

Russia's permanent representative to Vienna-based international organizations, Mikhail Ulyanov, has expressed concerns that any resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) against Iran could seriously deteriorate the situation.

Iran (IMNA) - Ulyanov made the warning in a post on his X account ahead of the regular meeting of the IAEA's Board of Governors, which is set to begin on Monday.

Ulyanov emphasized that such a resolution would not bring positive results but could instead lead to a deterioration of the situation. He expressed hope that no resolution against Iran would be approved during the session. The Russian envoy's warning comes as the European parties to the 2015 nuclear deal, Britain, France, and Germany, have circulated a draft resolution against Iran and appear determined to push it.

The draft resolution is expected to discuss verification and monitoring in Iran in light of United Nations Security Council resolution 2231 (2015) and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Safeguards Agreement with the country. However, the US and its European partners, known as the E3, are reportedly divided over the issue, with Washington fearing that any resolution could risk further escalation in the region.

Iran has consistently maintained that it will continue to cooperate with the IAEA to resolve disputed issues surrounding its nuclear program. The country has already sorted out almost half of the issues raised by the agency about its nuclear sites, according to the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami. Iran has also allowed more inspections of its nuclear activities by the UN nuclear watchdog than other countries, despite rejecting a previous resolution as politically-motivated.
