Iran (IMNA) - During the opening ceremony, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi addressed reporters and offered condolences on the martyrdom of President Ebrahim Raeisi and his entourage in the tragic helicopter crash that occurred on May 19. Vahidi stated that despite the great loss, the country smoothly navigated the crisis without any disruption in affairs.
The Interior Minister had previously issued a decree last weekend, ordering governors of provinces and cities across Iran to set up election executive committees in their regions within the next three days, paving the way for the snap presidential elections.
The candidate registration period, which began today, will continue until June 3. President Raeisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, two senior local officials, a protection officer, and three flight crew members were onboard the helicopter that crashed in mountainous regions near Iran's Varzaqan region as they were returning from a dam inauguration service held on the border with the Republic of Azerbaijan.
A council comprising the heads of three branches of the Iranian government held a meeting a day after the helicopter crash and agreed on June 28 as the date for early presidential elections in the country.
