Iran (IMNA) - The helicopter, carrying President Raeisi and his accompanying delegation, crashed in the Dizmar forest in the northwestern province of East Azarbaijan on Sunday. The crash resulted in the loss of life of all on board, including East Azarbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati, Friday Prayers leader of the city of Tabriz Seyyed Mohammad Ali Al-e Hashem, a member of the president's bodyguard team Mahdi Mousavi, the helicopter's pilot, co-pilot, and crew.
The delegation was returning from a ceremony to inaugurate a dam on the Aras River with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev when the tragedy occurred.
Following the tragic event, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei declared a 5-day mourning period in Iran. Farewell ceremonies were held in Tabriz, Qom, and Tehran's Grand Mosalla Mosque on Tuesday, attended by hundreds of thousands of people.
The funeral ceremony for President Raeisi is scheduled to take place at the University of Tehran on Wednesday morning, followed by a commemoration ceremony in the afternoon, which will be attended by high-ranking foreign delegations. The body of martyr Raeisi will then be transferred to South Khorasan Province on Thursday for another funeral before its final destination, the Holy city of Mashhad in Razavi Khorasan Province.
