Iran (IMNA) - This comes as the Israeli regime continues its aggressive war against the besieged Gaza Strip. The parliamentarians are asking UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron to follow the example of countries like Canada, which has already ceased arms exports to Israel.
The letter argues that the ongoing sale of UK arms to Israel, despite the ongoing violence, is "totally unacceptable." It cites a specific incident where an F-16 fighter jet, partially made in the UK, was likely responsible for a bombing that killed British doctors in Gaza two months ago. The MPs also point out that the UK government had previously suspended arms sales to Israel during two other wars on Gaza. They express concern that despite the escalating violence, the UK government has not taken any action in response.
In the midst of indications that the Israeli government plans to disregard the most recent UN Security Council decision, which calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, 107 MPs and 27 peers signed the letter, which was organized by Labour MP Zarah Sultana.
Nearly the whole parliamentary party of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and 46 Labour MPs supported the call.
Sultana declared, "It is impossible to ignore the case for an end to arms sales given that the Israeli regime appears to be disobeying the UN Security Council's ceasefire resolution."
"This call from 130 cross-party parliamentarians demands that the UK government finally respect the rights of the Palestinian people and immediately end arms sales to Israel."
