Iran's IRGC Conducts Maritime Security Belt 2024 Naval Drills with Homegrown Warships

Three homegrown warships recently added to Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) naval fleet participated in a combined naval exercise at the northern tip of the Indian Ocean, conducting major maritime maneuvers. Rear Admiral Mohammad Nozari, Commander of the IRGC Navy's Imam Ali Base in Chabahar, announced that the Shahid Mahmoudi, Shahid Soleimani, and Shahdi Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis warships, along with the Tondar-class Shahid Tavassoli frigate, IRGC maritime helicopters, and marines, took part in the Maritime Security Belt 2024 war game.

Iran (IMNA) - Nozari highlighted that the IRGC warships, armed with indigenously-manufactured sophisticated munitions, are capable of undertaking long-haul missions in oceans and open seas, ensuring prolonged naval presence. The naval exercise covered an expanse of 17 thousand square kilometers, including three of the world's five strategic straits in the northern Indian Ocean region, a crucial hub for global energy and trade traffic.

The objectives of the Maritime Security Belt 2024 drills included consolidating security in the region, promoting multilateral cooperation among participating countries, and jointly safeguarding global peace and maritime security. The exercise featured various tactical maneuvers such as rescuing vessels on fire, liberating hijacked merchant vessels, striking designated targets, conducting night aerial target operations, and other tactical and operational drills.

Rear Admiral Mostafa Tajeddini, spokesman for the joint war game, mentioned that naval forces of Iran, Russia, and China successfully conducted a photo exercise (PHOTOEX) and practiced formation of various tactical patterns. The two-day naval drills, which began on Tuesday, involved naval and airborne units of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy, along with Chinese and Russian counterparts. Observers from naval delegations of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Oman, Pakistan, and South Africa also participated in the exercises.
