Iran (IMNA) - During the 37th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, AU Commission Chairman Moussa Faki condemned Israel's "savagery" and indiscriminate attacks on Gaza. "We unequivocally condemn these attacks, which are unprecedented in human history," Faki emphasized.
He extended the AU's solidarity with the Palestinian people, accusing Israel of "annihilating" the inhabitants of Gaza. Iran has welcomed the AU's stance, stating that it contributes to ending the Israeli onslaught on Gaza and protecting Palestinian lives.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kan'ani, has expressed "categorical support" for the recent statement by the African Union (AU) condemning Israel's ongoing offensive in Palestine. Kan'ani emphasized on Sunday that the statement "shows the commitment of the Union, as well as African leaders and nations to valuable humanitarian ideals regarding Palestine."
He asserted that Iran believes continued support from African and other nations for the Palestinian people will "tighten the grip on the Zionist warmongers and criminals, and their supporters." Kan'ani added that such stances will "pave the way for the cessation of the [Israeli] onslaught on Gaza and the [occupied] West Bank, and will alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people."
His comments come as Israel continues its 135-day military operation in Gaza, which has claimed the lives of nearly 29,000 Palestinians, primarily women and children. Hamas has issued a statement demanding the severance of all relations with Israel and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
"We call for severing all ties with the criminal Zionist entity," the militant group said in a statement.
Hamas emphasized its support for the Palestinian people's struggle until they achieve "their legitimate national rights," including the establishment of "the Palestinian State with al-Quds as its capital."
The statement did not provide further details on how ties with Israel would be severed or the specific steps towards establishing an independent Palestinian state.
