Gaza dying not only from bombs, but from lack of food, clean water

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that acute shortages of food, water, as well as fuel, and medicine are putting people at risk of death in the Gaza Strip, urging an end to Israel’s war on the besieged territories.

Iran (IMNA) - “People in Gaza are dying not only from bombs and bullets, but from lack of food and clean water, and hospitals without power & medicine. This must stop,” Guterres said on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday.

UN chief urged an end to the Israeli war, adding that he will “not relent” in his call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of Israeli captives held in Gaza.

UN Secretary-General Guterres Highlights Unprecedented Destruction and Civilian Casualties in Gaza during Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit

In his address to the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on Saturday, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed grave concern over the widespread destruction in Gaza and the alarming number of civilian casualties. Guterres emphasized that such devastation within a short period of time is unparalleled during his tenure.

While acknowledging the efforts of humanitarian organizations in delivering aid to the affected regions, Guterres highlighted the immense challenges they face. He pointed out that constant bombardments and daily dangers impede their progress, compounded by the extensive damage to roads, communication blackouts, and restricted access. Tragically, 152 UN personnel have lost their lives in the line of duty thus far.

Guterres also drew attention to the worsening conditions of disease and hunger in the area. The combination of these factors poses an increasingly dire situation for the people of Gaza, demanding urgent attention and action from the international community.

UN Report Reveals Two Palestinian Mothers Killed Every Hour in Gaza, Highlighting Protection Crisis for Women and Girls

In a recent report released by UN Women on Friday, shocking statistics reveal that two Palestinian mothers are losing their lives every hour in the conflict-ridden region of Gaza. The report further states that since October 7, women and children account for a staggering 70 percent of civilian casualties.

The Gaza conflict has transformed into a dire protection crisis specifically impacting the lives of women and girls. Tragically, nowhere within the enclave is deemed safe. Women now face unprecedented levels of death and are grappling with catastrophic levels of humanitarian needs.

The situation in Gaza is dire, with the UN estimating that 85 percent of the population is internally displaced. Acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine plague the region, exacerbating the already dire circumstances. Additionally, approximately 60 percent of the enclave's infrastructure has been damaged or completely destroyed.

Alarming figures indicate that out of the 1.9 million people currently displaced, nearly a million are women and girls, underscoring the urgent need for immediate action to protect the lives and well-being of this vulnerable population.
