UN Agencies Warn of Widespread Hunger, Dire Conditions in Besieged Gaza Strip

The United Nations agencies have issued a warning about the dire situation faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as they grapple with hunger and deteriorating conditions amidst what is described as Israel's genocidal war.

Iran (IMNA) - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) took to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday to emphasize the severity of the issue, stating that "hunger stalks everyone." They further revealed that a significant number of people in the Gaza Strip have gone without food for two to three days.

UNRWA strongly criticized Israel for employing food, water, and fuel as weapons of war in a systematic manner. These accusations align with the findings of a report published last week by the World Food Programme (WFP), which highlighted that 91 percent of households in Gaza reported going to bed hungry. Additionally, an alarming 63 percent of households endured entire days without any food. The WFP conducted this rapid food security assessment during the seven-day truce, which expired on November 30th.

UN Special Rapporteur Warns of Genocide in Gaza as US Vetoes Ceasefire Resolution

In a recent statement to Al Jazeera Arabic, UN Special Rapporteur on Food, Michael Fakhri, expressed grave concern over the dire situation in Gaza, stating that "every single Palestinian in Gaza is going hungry." Fakhri went on to warn of a potential genocide unfolding in the region.

Despite widespread international condemnation, the United States has chosen to disregard calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. On Friday, the US shamefully vetoed a UN resolution that sought to bring an end to the ongoing conflict. This move has drawn criticism from not only the Palestinian Authority but also global leaders, organizations, and even American lawmakers.

By defying worldwide pleas for de-escalation, the United States has once again reaffirmed its support for a "military solution" to the crisis, effectively endorsing the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

World Health Organization Warns of Impending Collapse of Gaza's Healthcare System

In a dire announcement, the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised alarm about the imminent collapse of Gaza's healthcare system. The WHO's director-general expressed grave concern, emphasizing that Gaza's health system is in a state of complete disarray and on the verge of collapsing. This situation is expected to worsen with the deteriorating conditions and the arrival of winter. The director-general further highlighted the perilous combination of overcrowding, inadequate access to essential resources such as food, water, shelter, and sanitation, which are creating a breeding ground for the rapid spread of diseases. Urgent action is needed to address these critical issues and prevent a catastrophic health crisis in Gaza.

Gaza Crisis: Over 1.9 Million Displaced as Infectious Diseases Spread Rapidly

In the ongoing aggression between Israel and Gaza, up to 1.9 million Gazans, accounting for more than 85 percent of the total population, have been forced to flee their homes. The Palestinian Health Ministry has reported that a staggering one in six people in Gaza is currently battling an infectious disease.

Doctors Without Borders' emergency coordinator in Gaza, Nicholas Papachrysostomou, spoke to Al Jazeera about the dire situation. He revealed that respiratory infections are rampant in Rafah, particularly due to the rainy and cold conditions. In some overcrowded shelters, up to 600 individuals are sharing a single toilet, leading to an increase in cases of diarrhea. Children are among the most vulnerable and affected by these unsanitary conditions.

The conflict was sparked when Hamas launched Operation Al-Aqsa Storm in retaliation against Israel's intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people. The war, which began on October 7, has inflicted severe suffering on the people of Gaza.
