Iran (IMNA) - In a recent phone call with Iran's Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Borrell expressed his concerns and discussed the ongoing situation in the blockaded Palestinian territory, which is currently facing intense bombardment from Israeli forces. Borrell emphasized the EU's firm stance against terrorism and their commitment to protecting civilians at all times. Taking to his X account on Tuesday, he stated, "It is crucial for everyone's benefit to avoid a regional escalation. I have urged Iran to leverage its influence to prevent further escalation in the region."
Israel has initiated a military campaign against the Gaza Strip on October 7. The offensive was launched in response to what Israel claims was a surprise attack by the Palestinian Hamas resistance group, known as Operation Al-Aqsa Storm. Hamas stated that their operation was a reaction to Israel's continuous violations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East al-Quds and the escalating violence from Israeli settlers.
The consequences of Israel's relentless airstrikes have devastating. It has resulted in the loss of 2,866 Palestinian lives and left another 12,000 individuals wounded. Additionally, Israel's actions have caused severe disruptions in basic necessities such as water, food, and electricity, leading to a dire humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
Adding to the growing concerns, Iran's foreign minister, Amir-Abdollahian, recently warned that the possibility of the Gaza war expanding to other fronts is becoming increasingly inevitable. During a phone conversation with Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin, Abdollahian condemned the Zionist regime's crimes and its imposition of a blockade on Gaza, preventing the entry of vital humanitarian aid.
Abdollahian emphasized the urgent need to establish suitable corridors for the delivery of essential resources such as water, food, pharmaceuticals, and medical supplies to the people of Gaza. He further highlighted the alarming statistic that between 300 and 700 civilians are being killed in Gaza each day. The Iranian foreign minister stressed that it is imperative for the Zionist regime to immediately cease its acts of terrorism and genocide against the Palestinian population.
