Over 2,000 prisoners' sentences commuted by Ayatollah Khamenei

On the eve of Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) birthday, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, has granted pardons or sentence reductions to over 2000 Iranian prisoners.

Iran (IMNA) - This decision was made in response to a request by Iran's Judiciary chief, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, specifically for 2,284 inmates who were eligible for parole or sentence reduction. These prisoners had been convicted in various courts, including public and Islamic Revolution courts, the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces, and the State Discretionary Punishment Organization.

The clemency coincided with the birthday anniversaries of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Imam Ja'far Sadiq (AS), the sixth Shia Imam. It is customary for the Leader to issue such decrees during religious festivities. According to Article 110 of Iran's Constitution, the Leader has the authority to pardon or reduce sentences based on the recommendation of the head of the Judiciary. However, it is important to note that certain categories of prisoners, such as those involved in armed struggle against the country, armed or organized drug trafficking, rape, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery, and embezzlement, are not eligible for this clemency.

During the month of April, in celebration of Eid al-Fitr, which signifies the end of Ramadan, the Leader granted pardons and reduced sentences for more than 1,700 prisoners.

In February, Ayatollah Khamenei also agreed to pardon or lessen the sentences for individuals who were arrested during the riots in September 2022, which were instigated by foreign influences following the tragic death of Mahsa Amini.

The Leader issued this approval on the 44th anniversary of the glorious victory of the Islamic Revolution, which marked the overthrow of the US-backed Pahlavi regime in 1979. It also coincided with the birthday of Imam Ali (AS), the first Shia Imam.

According to reports, a significant number of prisoners were released as a result of this decree. However, it is important to note that certain conditions were attached to this mass amnesty. The pardon did not apply to individuals convicted of spying for foreign intelligence agencies, those with affiliations to groups hostile to the Islamic Republic, or those detained on serious security-related charges.
