Irrigation wells account for more than 65% of Iran's water consumption

According to a recent report, irrigation wells contribute to more than two-thirds of Iran's total water consumption.

Iran (IMNA) - The excessive extraction of water from underground sources poses significant environmental challenges for the country. The report, based on data from Iran's Energy Ministry, states that there are currently over 1.02 million irrigation wells in Iran, which extracted 41.367 billion cubic meters of water in the calendar year up to March 2022.

An expert on water resources, Mohammad Pourhamid, emphasized the need for Iran's water management system to prioritize the preservation of underground resources. The report warns that the increasing water extraction, primarily aimed at boosting agricultural output, could jeopardize the livelihoods of farmers and rural communities in Iran in the future.

The report also highlights specific regions within Iran that have recorded significant water outtake from irrigation wells. Kerman, a province in the southeast, had the highest water extraction of 5.7 billion cubic meters during the year up to late March 2022. On the other hand, Mazandaran, a province located in Iran's north along the Caspian Sea, had the largest number of irrigation wells, totaling over 196,000.

Furthermore, the report indicates that the average water extraction from an irrigation well in Iran was approximately 40,527 cubic meters per year or 111 cubic meters per day during the period up to late March 2022.
