Five months after normalization, Saudi embassy in Tehran restarts activities

According to a knowledgeable Iranian source, the Saudi embassy in Tehran has reopened in response to Tehran's embassy in Riyadh reopening in June.

Iran (IMNA) - According to an authoritative source at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, "The embassy of the Saudi Kingdom in the Islamic Republic of Iran has officially begun its work in our country since Sunday, August 6," IRNA said on Wednesday. The source did not provide any other information.

Riyadh shuttered its diplomatic posts in Tehran in 2016 after they were destroyed by demonstrators upset by Saudi execution of leading Shia cleric Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.

In March, the two nations signed a normalization deal negotiated by China, under which they agreed to end a seven-year break in relations.

After signing the deal, Tehran and Riyadh issued a joint statement emphasizing the need of respecting each other's national sovereignty and refraining from intervening in one another's internal affairs.

They agreed to put into effect a security cooperation agreement signed in April 2001 and another in May 1998 to strengthen connections in several sectors.

Iran named experienced diplomat Alireza Enayati as its ambassador to Saudi Arabia in May.

In June, Tehran reopened its embassy in Riyadh and its consulate in the harbor city of Jeddah.
