Iran (IMNA) - Ali Bahadori-Jahromi tweeted on Tuesday, "With the conclusion of the north-south railway's [construction], Iran will be able to take back its historical status as Asia's trade passage."
After it is finished, the railway will provide businesses and other economic operators traveling between Asia and Europe with a "shorter and cheaper" route.
He maintained that the change would make Iran a "trade crossroads" for the area and offer "stable and profuse" income to the Islamic Republic.
The passage connects Europe to countries that lie along the coastal regions of the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, and Southeast Asia, including the stretch that passes through Iran.
It takes 21 days to move cargo along the route. However, the other marine route, which crosses Europe's western and then southern flanks before entering the Red Sea, requires 45 days to complete and adds a 30% cost.
After Mohammad Jamshidi, the Iranian president's deputy chief of staff for political affairs, indicated that an agreement on the building of the last section of the railway within Iranian territory was imminently coming to fruition, Jahromi made his remarks.
The source said that the agreement on its construction will be signed during a ceremony that featured keynote remarks by President Ebrahim Raeisi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The final stretch of the project connects the northern Iranian cities of Rasht and Astara.
After 23 years, the north-south rail tunnel between South Asia and northern Europe will finally be finished, according to Jamshidi.
