Iran's hydroelectric output expected to rise by 30% in the year to March

The Iranian Energy Ministry anticipates hydroelectric output to rise by 30% in the year to March 2024 due to increasing precipitation, which has resulted in higher water levels in Iran's reservoirs.

Iran (IMNA) - According to the deputy head of Iran's Water and Energy Resources Development Company, energy output from hydroelectric dams in southern Khuzestan province would grow this calendar year due to rising water levels in two major reservoirs in the region.

Vahid Izadi stated that the water levels at the Gotvand Olya and Karun 4 dams had reached 85% of the reservoirs' capacity and predicted that the two hydroelectric plants' combined power output will approach 2 GW this year.

The country also has four more hydroelectric dams with a combined capacity of 1.3 GW.

Izadi stated that a new hydropower plant with a capacity of 55 megawatts would be operational in July at the Chamshir dam, a huge reservoir in southern Iran.

Iran has seen more rainfall since the start of the water year in late September.

With regard to the numbers provided by the Energy Ministry on Tuesday, water levels in dams across Iran climbed by 26% year on year in the seven months to late April, reaching 30.8 billion cubic meters.

According to the Ministry, Iran's water reservoirs were 62% full in late April, a minor improvement from the 61% level stated in late March.
