China to receive first consignment of honey from Iran

According to an official, China, the world's top producer of honey, will shortly receive a cargo of honey from Iran.

Iran (IMNA) - "This is a very good opportunity to strengthen Iran's honey's position in the world markets," Touraj Saremi, the chairman of Iran's beekeeping development plan said.

President Ebrahim Raeisi's historic trip to China in February, which resulted in the signing of multiple agreements, will be followed by the shipment. A document authorizing the shipment of Iranian goods, including honey, to China was signed by the delegation, which included Iran's Minister of Agriculture Javad Sa'adatinejad.

Normally, China produces over 500,000 tonnes of honey each year, accounting for roughly one-quarter of worldwide output. It exports over 100,000 tonnes to destinations such as Europe and the United States. However, the country's beekeepers have suffered as a result of a coronavirus epidemic and the ensuing strict efforts to combat the virus.

Iran is third in the world for honey production, behind China and Turkey, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

However, according to Saremi, FAO has to update its figures on Iran, which would likely position the country second.

He claimed that Iran produced 136,000 tonnes of honey in 2022, although the FAO reported a far lower amount of 77,000 tonnes for the year.

Nonetheless, because of its plant diversity and natural resources, Iran's honey producing capability is considerably greater. Iran has 8000 plant species, which is three times more than the European continent.

Fars in the south and northwestern provinces of East and West Azarbaijan, Ardabil, and Kermanshah produce 65 percent of the country's honey.

According to a growth plan published by Iran's Animal Science Research Institute, beekeepers are going to increase average honey output in each colony to 4 kg from 3 kg now.

China, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Germany, England, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, and Indonesia, Malaysia, Iraq, and Lebanon are the top export destinations for Iranian honey.
