Iran supports truce in Yemen

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said the Islamic Republic backs intra-Yemeni dialogues to settle the conflict in the Arab country, which is torn apart by war.

Iran (IMNA) - Amir-Abdollahian reiterated Tehran's backing for the continuation of the ceasefire and the termination of the Saudi-led blockade of Yemen during a Monday meeting with UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg in Tehran.

He added that Iran is in favor of any conversation that advances stability and peace in Yemen.

The senior Iranian diplomat also applauded the UN secretary general's efforts and the selection of a special envoy to track the circumstances in Yemen.

For his part, the UN special envoy urged Iran to assist the international organization's initiatives to advance peace in Yemen.

Grundberg reaffirmed the UN's steadfast commitment to resolving the ongoing crisis in Yemen through political means.

With the armed and logistical help of their Western allies, Saudi Arabia and its allies began the catastrophic war on Yemen in March 2015, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis.

The war also uprooted millions of people, leaving them homeless, while damaging the country's infrastructure and producing the largest humanitarian disaster of the modern era.

The most recent ceasefire, which began in April 2022, had reignited hopes of peace, but the Saudi-led coalition violated the terms of the accord, leading Yemenis to resume their resistance.

After a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen, the United Nations announced late last month that it will require $4.3 billion this year to assist millions of people in the war-torn country, warning that failing to deliver relief would jeopardize their lives.
