Iran sealed agreement with Russia to purchase Sukhoi Su-35 jets

Iran has sealed an agreement with Russia to buy Sukhoi Su-35 warplanes, as Tehran and Moscow seek to expand defense and economic ties despite sweeping sanctions and coercive measures.

Iran (IMNA) - "After the conclusion of the Iran-Iraq war in 1988, Iran asked a number of countries to look into the prospect of delivering fighter planes to Iran, and Russia stated it was capable of selling them," Iran's UN delegation said on Friday, according to Russia's Sputnik news agency.

"The Sukhoi Su-35s are technically acceptable to Iran. Hence, after October 2020, when Iran's prohibitions on conventional weapons procurement (based on UN Security Council Resolution 2231) are lifted, Tehran has ultimately consented to purchase them "it added.

Nevertheless, the diplomatic team did not disclose when the agreement was signed or when Russia will deliver the fighter planes to Iran. It provided no further information regarding the purchase since it is classified.

Iran and Russia have both been targeted with US-led sanctions in recent years, but the restrictions have failed to guarantee Western countries' interests.

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a presidential order in April 2015, opening the way for the long-delayed supply of S-300 long-range air defense systems to Iran soon after the conclusion of the JCPOA.
