Iran (IMNA) - According to Hossein Zeinali, head of Iranian Agriculture Ministry's department for medicinal herbs, the country exported 178 metric tons of saffron worth $173 million in the ten months leading up to January 20.
He claimed that when compared to the same time last year, the figure had increased by 55.62%.
Zeinali noted that the growth in Iranian saffron exports was due to improved government backing for the sector, including guaranteed purchases from farmers and credit concessions for exporters, adding that the saffron areas under cultivation in the country has increased to over 122,000 hectares in the year to March 2022.
According to the head of Iranian Agriculture Ministry's department for medicinal herbs, Iran now has 326 saffron processing and packaging facilities having an annual production capacity of 596 metric tons, and more than half of those facilities are located in the eastern Khorasan Razavi province, where the majority of the nation's saffron crop is produced.
In Iranian culture, saffron is a wonderful element used in everything from scented dishes and colorful pastries to medical and spiritual treatment. Iran is one of the world's leading saffron producers and exporters, with over 90% of its production is delivered to foreign markets.
