Flash floods take lives of at least 19 in Shiraz

Flash flooding has killed 18 people and around 105 injured in Iran’s southern Fars province, the official news agency, Irna, reported on Monday.

Iran (IMNA) -Dramatic videos indicated the torrents of muddy water move suddenly and powerfully (forward & upward) through the city of Shiraz where most of the deaths occurred.

People were seen clinging to power poles and standing at the tops of their cars. Hundreds of buildings also were reported to be damaged. The floods struck during the Persian New Year holiday when many government offices were closed.

The governor of Fars province, Enayatollah Rahimi, said the flooding is now under control and rescue teams have been deployed to the worst-hit areas.

"20 out of 105 injured people have been bedridden and the rest discharged from the hospitals hopefully", Irna reported.
