Iran (IMNA) – "Toreutics (Ghalam Zani) is one of the old handicrafts of Iran that is categorized in the artistic metalworking. Actually, engraving is the art of decorating and carving various designs by hammering on metal objects; especially copper, gold, silver, and brass," Ali Abazari, a toreutics activist, said.
Pointing out that the engraving art dates back to the first millennium, he added, "during Mughal and Timurid eras, incrustation in containers continued as an imitation of the Seljuk era, and using calligraphy in engraving increased subsequently; many containers of this kind were made and decorated in that periods. In the Safavid era, this art bloomed, especially when silver beating became common and made Ghalam Zani to be culminated.
"Isfahan is one of the most important artistic cities and somehow is the center of Ghalam Zani in Iran" he noted. Saying that in the first stage of Ghalam Zani, behind the surface that is supposed to be engraved should be covered with bitumen, he said, "Using bitumen causes the containers not to warp during the engraving stages, and prevents producing too much noises. After the container gets cooled, the engraving place will be prepared to design by whitewashing."
