Isfahan(IMNA) - It has five finger holes in front and one thumb hole in the back. The edges of one end of the Nay which is put in the mouth of a performer and also the other end are covered with a short brass cover which is so thin, so that it can be placed between the front teeth of the performer.
The Ney has a 2 & 1/2 octave range and it is usually played by a soloist. The sound is produced when a performer blows the air into the Ney from the top end, then by putting and taking off the fingers on the holes, beautiful sounds produced. The Ney like the oboe appears in the symphony orchestra usually as a solo instrument.
Hasan Kasai is one of the greatest musician and famous Ney player (nay nawaz) who became familiar with the Ney at the age of 4 or 5 then enter to the world of music. In past time, the sound of the Nay was unclear that there was no significant difference between the sounds peak and base. But Kasai produced a very clear sound by changing the position of tongue, lip and top of the Nay.
He was acquainted with music from childhood and over the course of time, his great interest in music, especially the Nay led his father to take him to Mehdi Nawai for learning it. After death of Mahdi Nawa'i, Kasai continued to accompany Isfahanian musicians especially Jalil Shahnaz to take the professional control over the Ney.
Also his accompaniment with Tar and Setar musical instruments, made him to be more familiar with various scales of Iranian music. So, for the first time he played the instrument in Chahargah, Isfahan, Nava and Rast panjghah modes in a perfect way. He was educated at the feet of Abolhassan Saba and benefited from his talent so that we can say his art of playing Setar, was because of his companionship with this unique musician.
