Iranian Envoy Reaffirms Commitment to Maritime Security, Calls for End to Israeli Aggression

Iran remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of maritime navigation and has exercised its inherent right to defend its vital interests in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, Iran’s ambassador and chargé d’affaires to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, said.

Iran (IMNA) – Speaking at a UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting on the situation in the Middle East and Palestine, Darzi said the Israeli regime had repeatedly demonstrated its disregard for international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to maritime safety and security, stressing that the country had acted within its inherent right to defend its vital interests under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Addressing the situation in Palestine, Darzi said conditions remained dire despite the announced ceasefire, accusing the Israeli regime of continuing its aggression and human rights violations with impunity.

“Despite the announced ceasefire, the genocidal Israeli regime continues its aggression and human rights violations with impunity. Meanwhile, Gaza remains devastated and subject to ongoing military attacks, and the Palestinian people endure immense suffering,” he said.

The Iranian envoy added that Israel continued to expand illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, intensify settler violence and acts of terror, and pursue unlawful measures aimed at annexing Palestinian territories and depriving Palestinians of their land.

Darzi stressed the need for a permanent end to the aggression, the lifting of the blockade on Gaza, and the establishment of a lasting ceasefire. He also called for the unconditional and complete withdrawal of Israeli occupying forces from Gaza, alongside the immediate and continuous delivery of humanitarian aid and the deployment of relief personnel.

He said no arrangements concerning Gaza could be considered legitimate if they subordinated Palestinian rights to externally imposed security considerations.

“Any arrangements or framework concerning the future of Gaza must fully respect the inherent rights of the Palestinians, as well as their independence and right to self-determination,” he added.

Darzi emphasized that Palestinians must be able to exercise their legitimate right to self-determination and establish an independent, sovereign and viable state, with the holy occupied city of al-Quds as its capital, while securing full membership in the United Nations.

Turning to the wider region, the Iranian diplomat called on Israel to end its aggression and violations, including its daily breaches of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He demanded a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

He also called for an end to Israeli attacks and military aggression against Syrian territory, a withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan and other occupied areas, and respect for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Darzi stressed that accountability for serious violations of international law, particularly international humanitarian law, was both essential and a legal requirement.

Over the past three years, he said, the Israeli regime had committed major international crimes against the peoples of Palestine, Lebanon and Syria, as well as against Iran, including genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Darzi condemned the United States and Israel for launching two rounds of what he described as unprovoked aggression against Iran: one in June and another from February 28 to April 7 this year.

He said the aggressors had committed war crimes by deliberately targeting civilians and critical infrastructure.

The Iranian envoy also attributed the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz to what he described as American-Israeli atrocities, including a US naval blockade.
