Iran (IMNA) – In a letter dated Saturday local time, Ambassador Gholamhossein Darzi said NATO’s chief stated in a September 23 address that around 5,000 aircraft had flown from European bases since February 28 in support of what was referred to as “Operation Epic Fury.”
According to Darzi, the NATO official said the figure covered flights only through mid-April and that the actual number was likely significantly higher.
Darzi said the remarks demonstrate the significant role played by European territory and infrastructure in supporting US military action against Iran. He added that this could raise questions regarding both state responsibility and the individual criminal responsibility of European officials involved in planning, preparing, facilitating or carrying out acts of aggression and war crimes.
The Iranian envoy called on the UN Security Council, in view of its responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, to urgently examine the matter.
The letter also reiterated Iran’s position that US and Israeli military actions against the country violate its sovereignty and territorial integrity and contravene Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, including through what Iran described as an illegal blockade.
According to the letter, the military actions have included strikes against civilians and civilian targets, resulting in the deaths of more than 3,600 people, including at least 254 children and 251 women, while many others have been wounded.
Darzi further said Iran believes that certain European countries facilitated the attacks by providing territory, airspace, military facilities and other logistical and operational capabilities.
He argued that such conduct could constitute a breach of obligations under the UN Charter and could also fall within the concept of participation in or assistance to an act of aggression as defined in UN General Assembly Resolution 3314 (XXIX).
