Iran (IMAN) - Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi said in an official statement that the meeting, which had been scheduled to take place Monday in Salalah, Oman, was postponed to ensure the necessary conditions for reaching an agreement.
“We remain committed to strengthening dialogue that supports stability and sustainable cooperation in the region,” al-Busaidi said.
Mohammad Ali Bek, director-general of the Persian Gulf region department at Iran's Foreign Ministry, also said the meeting of foreign ministers of the Persian Gulf coastal states, planned for Monday, had been moved to another date at the request of some regional countries and by a joint decision of Oman and Iran.
He said Iran, in close consultation with Oman, will make the necessary arrangements to determine a suitable time for holding the meeting.
The regional meeting in Oman was scheduled to focus on issues related to the Strait of Hormuz and shipping arrangements in the strategic waterway.
Araghchi Says Oman Understanding Does Not Mean Reopening of Strait of Hormuz
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that an understanding expected to be reached with Oman does not mean the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Araghchi made the remarks in an interview with Al Araby Al Jadeed, ahead of a regional meeting in Oman on Monday involving Iran, Iraq and other countries bordering the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
He said the agenda of the meeting would include discussions on a new maritime route in the Strait of Hormuz.
“We will provide the details of the agreement with Oman and the maps related to the new route to the participating countries,” Araghchi said, according to Press TV.
The Iranian foreign minister further clarified that an understanding with the Sultanate of Oman “in no way means the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.”
He added that Iran’s condition for reopening the strait was “the return of the United States to its commitments under the Islamabad memorandum.”
Araghchi also said Tehran believed that responsibility for ensuring regional security and stability rested solely with the countries of the region.
“We hope these talks will pave the way for future consultations on issues of concern to the countries of the region,” he said.
