Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini led the Iran's Islamic Revolution that overthrew Iran's monarchy forty years ago. As soon as the Islamic government took the place of the absolute monarchy, Iran changed from being an important U.S friend to a fierce enemy.

Many Iranian cities were filled with strikes and mass protest against the Shah during days leading to February 11, 1979. Demonstrations spread across the country with protesters accusing the Shah of being a U.S. puppet.

Despite the imposition of martial law, thousands of people poured into the streets to protest against Iran's Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

During protests, demonstrators set fires on the streets and yelled "Death to the Shah" while holding up posters of Islamic leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. IMNA takes a look back, through images, at the Islamic revolution on the occasion of the 44th anniversary.
