Iran (IMNA) - The Stockholm Court of Appeals upheld Nouri's controversial life sentence, which was based on unfounded allegations of rights abuse and his alleged involvement in the deaths of prisoners in Iran during the 1980s. Nasser Kan'ani, the spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, strongly condemns the verdict, expressing regret over the Swedish court's disregard for fair trial standards.
Sweden's recent ruling has strained relations with Iran, as it is seen to align with anti-Iran terrorist groups. Kan'ani, an Iranian official, expressed concern over the decision, stating that Sweden's support for these groups undermines the longstanding ties between the two nations. He further emphasized that these terrorist organizations have been responsible for heinous acts against the people of Iran, Iraq, and even Europe for many years. In response, Iran has utilized all available legal means to secure the release of its citizen affected by this ruling and will persist in its efforts until justice is served.
In November 2019, Nouri was apprehended and promptly incarcerated upon his arrival at Stockholm Airport.
He faced a trial centered on allegations orchestrated by individuals affiliated with the Mujahedin-e-Khalq Organization (MKO), a designated terrorist group. The MKO openly takes pride in conducting acts of terrorism against Iranian officials and civilians deemed to be supportive of the government.
The group falsely accused Nouri of participating in the execution and mistreatment of MKO members back in 1988, charges which he vehemently denies.
