Iran's Rail Transportation Saves $1.3 Billion in Fuel Costs, Sets Record for Passengers in Previous Year

The managing director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI) has announced that rail transportation in the country resulted in a remarkable $1.3 billion in fuel savings during the previous Iranian calendar year.

Iran (IMNA)- According to Miad Salehi, over 29.67 million passengers were transported via the railway network, marking a historic milestone in Iran's rail transportation history, as reported by IRIB.

Salehi emphasized that the expansion of the railway network will not only bring economic and safety benefits but also have significant positive impacts on the environment by reducing fuel consumption and curbing air pollution. He highlighted the importance of promoting railway transportation and transit in achieving the goals outlined for the maritime economy, citing a recent comprehensive plan for its development.

To realize these objectives, Salehi stressed the need to connect the country's industrial centers to the railway network and enhance the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). He further revealed plans for the renovation of the railway fleet, stating that the average age of the freight transportation fleet has improved to approximately 25 years, compared to previous years.

Salehi also shared promising figures, stating that 1,598 new freight wagons were manufactured in the previous year, representing a substantial increase of 48 percent compared to the preceding year's production of 1,080 wagons.

Overall, these measures have been implemented to encourage public participation and attract investors to contribute to the development of Iran's railway industry.
