Title Devastating Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan, Causing Significant Losses

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck western Afghanistan on October 11, causing widespread destruction.

Iran (IMNA) - According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 28 kilometers (17 miles) outside Herat, the provincial capital of Herat. The quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

The Governor's Office of Herat reported that several districts, which had already been devastated by previous earthquakes, suffered further immense losses. The affected areas experienced significant damage, leading to the collapse of structures and infrastructure. Rescue operations are currently underway to provide assistance to those in need.

Mobile medical teams and officials have been collaborating to provide immediate medical aid to the injured. Several injured individuals have already been transferred to hospitals for treatment. The extent of the casualties and damage is yet to be fully assessed.

This recent earthquake follows two other devastating tremors that occurred on October 7, claiming the lives of dozens of people in western Afghanistan, as reported by the country's national disaster authority. Earlier quakes had already left neighboring areas flattened, resulting in a substantial loss of life. The Taliban officials have estimated that over 2,000 lives were lost in Herat due to the cumulative impact of these earthquakes.

Tragically, Afghanistan has faced a series of seismic events in recent years. In June 2022, a powerful earthquake struck a mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan, resulting in the destruction of numerous homes made of stone and mud-brick. This quake, the deadliest in the country in two decades, caused the loss of at least 1,000 lives and left around 1,500 people injured.

The Afghan authorities, along with international agencies and humanitarian organizations, continue to mobilize resources and support to assist the affected population. Efforts are underway to provide emergency relief, medical aid, and shelter to those affected by these devastating earthquakes.
