Iran Accelerates Construction of Second Nuclear Reactor, Plans for Third

Iran has made significant progress in the construction of its second nuclear reactor near the southern port of Bushehr, as confirmed by the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami.

Iran (IMNA) - The government's support and deals worth €1.8 billion have propelled the construction forward, resulting in a ten-fold increase in the pace of work compared to previous years. Eslami expressed optimism that the concrete pouring operation for the third nuclear reactor would commence soon.

Eslami further outlined the timeline for completion, stating that the second unit is expected to be finished and inaugurated within five years, while the third unit will follow within 1.5 years. These developments mark another milestone in Iran's nuclear energy program, which has faced challenges from US sanctions and Western obstacles.

The existing 1,000-megawatt Bushehr nuclear plant, built by Russia and formally handed over in September 2013, has been a significant source of electricity for Iran. It has produced a total of 60 billion kilowatt hours (kw/h) of electricity, including 7 billion kw/h in the previous year alone.

Masoud Nasouri, the engineer overseeing the project for the second and third Bushehr reactors, highlighted the environmental benefits these units will bring. They are estimated to save the country 10 million barrels of oil and $1,600 billion cubic meters of gas annually, while also preventing the emission of 7 million tons of toxic gases.

Iran's commitment to peaceful nuclear energy continues as it closely collaborates with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Despite facing various obstacles, Iran remains determined to advance its nuclear program and achieve self-sufficiency in meeting its energy needs.
