Iran (IMNA) - Ali Akbar Safaei, CEO of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), stated on Saturday that loading and unloading at Iranian ports climbed by 2.2% year on year through March 20 to 82 million metric tons.
Safaei said that the spike had occurred despite a stated decline in Iran's imports of necessities during the previous year.
According to him, container loading and unloading at Iranian ports climbed by 5% in the most recent year over the year up until late March 2022.
The PMO chairman said that exports from Iran accounted for 70% of overall port activity in the country in the year to late March, while passenger traffic in the ports climbed by 8% year on year during the same period.
As reported by Safaei, transit via Iranian ports climbed by 39% over the previous Iranian year. He also said that transit through northern Iranian ports on the Caspian Sea had greatly grown during this time as a result of a surge in goods coming from Russia and Europe.
The source said that Iran is substantially investing in the development of its port infrastructure and that there are now ongoing projects in the country's ports and coastal areas totaling over 530 trillion rials ($1.1 billion).
In the words of Safaei, the Iranian government has spent close to $1 billion on the acquisition or construction of large oceangoing ships.
